10,000 Turtles

10,000 Turtles, a new band founded by trombonist and composer Joost Buis, brings his original compositions together with six of his favourite musicians and improvisers. Some of the repertoire is written especially for the group, and some is rescued from the shelf after an earlier live in other projects.

The music draws on a tradition that runs from Duke Ellington's elegance and Herbie Nichols' quirky lyricism to Sun Ra's cosmic vision and Misha Mengelberg's wit.

The name nods to Taoist philosophy and ancient cosmology, a cosmic wink with a straight face.
